Mark Holthusen, who works out of California, had recently e-mailed me his new site link and mentioned some of the Gallery/Personal work that are also shown on this site. He does focus a lot on post-production execution but he does take care of as much as possible in 'real-time' to save more effort on the post work. Worth a look.I'm especially fascinated by his "Modern Icon" series where he completed a portrait series of priests from the local Russian Orthodox church. I photographed them from different angles and then rebuilt them to capture the odd distortions displayed in the traditional hand painted portraits. A unique interpretation certainly.
The roller derby portrait series is also well done as you can see here. Get inspired!
I think the Roller Derby portrait here is what I think of when I hear Dontez's idea about the stereotypes. The girl looks up scale with her fur, but up close, she is much more rugged and tough. She is blurring the lines of femininity and something a bit darker. Or at least that is how it feels to me. I like it. Those portraits have nice contrast and are lit very well and I keep getting lost in the face. The first set of photos, the priest, is interesting because of the place he decided to crop into on the face. It pulls me in and make me question why that area and that crop. I do feel like the cropped facial parts of the images are more interesting. Thank you for sharing this photographer.

ReplyDeleteThe portraits are really great. They are great lighted, you can see everything with really nice textures put at the same time the mood it's not break. I like the last one this the child soldier or the one with guy and the glasses.
